National Park (Potosí Bolivia) ... Part III: Getting Molle Turtle Cemetery
Photo 1: From the town of Torotoro is possible and advisable to walk to the cemetery Molle Turtle court, the way is beautiful and well signposted. 4 December 2005. Fuji Finepix 205.
Interview
Torotoro The current National Park (= PNTT) (Dept of Potosi, Bolivia) is the smallest National Park in Bolivia (166 km2). But has a great variety of ecosystems, some of them unique, such as property espeleoambientes and biota, in addition to a high relative number of endemics. Exploration on the PNTT have established that Torotoro is one of the most important paleontological sites in the country and the first in protected areas to be investigated for conservation purposes. For this park have been identified and prioritized 10 4 sites and paleontological areas including one of the most important is: Molle turtle graveyard court, from which the original description, holotype turtle Roxochelys vilavilensis ( cfc García et al 2009) from the Upper Cretaceous of Bolivia. In 2005, I shared with other researchers, the task of developing the management plan for this extraordinary natural protected area and I could live the experience of exploring this "turtle graveyard, where the most common species and to date the largest found is Roxochelys vilavilensis , Freshwater species akin to the great turtle of the Amazon ( P. expansa and P. unifilis ). Beyond the experience of having made contact with this species, the place has a mystique and beauty sui generis. Unfortunately, as with other paleontological sites in Bolivia, it is visited regularly by looters who know the value of these fossils in the international market. The body of Rangers of the National Protected Areas (SERNAP) is particularly suitable and other career for what he does, giving far more than are required by regulation. Unfortunately there are few, do not have the equipment necessary and find it difficult to control the organized vandalism. I personally enjoyed having been able to work in this beautiful National Park ... For those who want to know about this site and / or the National Park Torotoro, I refer to the management plan in which I worked and you can download the link included in the bibliography of this paper. I invite you now to share some images of this unique place called Turtle Cemetery ...
